Pediatric Dentistry is an age defined speciality that provides primary, comprehensive, preventive and therapeutic oral health care for infants and children through adolescence including those with special health care needs. As said ‘Children are not miniature adults and they are unique in nature,’ Department of Peadiatric and Preventive Dentistry focuses on individual child and aims at primordial and primary prevention and emphasize more on children with special health care needs.
We specialize in behaviour management strategies including pharmacological and non- pharmacological means in order to completely rehabilitate the child. Theoretical knowledge and clinical skills in managing the infants and children are imparted to the students in this department.To focus on providing compassionate, child-centered, coordinated, interdisciplinary, high-quality oral health care and to develop awareness among child patients, parents, dental professionals, and other healthcare providers.

Dr. Subbalekshmi is the Professor and Head of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry, as well as the Coordinator of the Faculty Development Unit at Malabar Dental College and Research Institute, Kerala. She holds a BDS and MDS from Sri Ramachandra Institute of Higher Education and Research, Chennai. Additionally, she has undergone specialized training in professions education at the University of Michigan, and clinical research methodology at Seattle Children’s, University of Washington.
Dr. Subbalekshmi has been a faculty member at renowned institutions such as SRIHER, Pushpagiri Dental College, and NIMS Dental College. She has led faculty development programs and has served as a reviewer and editor for prestigious national and international journals. She has received numerous accolades, including Best Paper for three consecutive years at ISPPD and the Distinguished Women Award from the Indian Society of Pediatric and Preventive Dentistry in 2024.
