Prof. Dr. Sudha S. is an eminent academician, accomplished clinician, visionary administrator, and dedicated public health advocate with an illustrious career spanning over three decades in Dentistry. She currently serves as the Principal of Malabar Dental College & Research Centre, Edappal, leading the institution with a commitment to academic excellence, ethical values, research innovation, and community-oriented healthcare.
A distinguished specialist in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Dr. Sudha earned her Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from Government Dental College, Thiruvananthapuram, in 1987 and completed her Master of Dental Surgery (MDS) in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology from Government Dental College, Kozhikode, in 2003.
Before assuming the role of Principal at Malabar Dental College & Research Centre, she rendered exemplary service in the Government Dental Education sector. She served as Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at Government Dental College, Kozhikode. Prior to that, she was Vice Principal of Government Dental College, Thrissur, and also held the additional charge of Principal, demonstrating exceptional administrative leadership and academic stewardship.
Throughout her distinguished career, Dr. Sudha has been honoured with numerous prestigious awards in recognition of her outstanding contributions to Dentistry, Education, Research, and Community Service. She received the National Best Scientific Paper Award in 2002, the Kerala State Government Best Doctor Award in 2016, and the Best Academician Award from the Global Society of Health and Education, New Delhi, in 2017. In 2018, she was honoured with the Best Socially Committed Dentist Award by PMS Dental College, the Professional Excellence Award by Brain's Institute, Kozhikode, and the Women Achiever Award by Surya TV. She has also received Professional Excellence Awards from reputed organizations including JCI, Y's Men's Club, Giants Club, and Lions Club. In 2021, she was presented with the Women Empowerment Award by DSHE, New Delhi, recognizing her outstanding contributions to healthcare and society.
An accomplished researcher and academic mentor, Dr. Sudha has authored around 35 scientific publications in state, national, and international journals. Her research contributions have enriched the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, while her dedication to academic excellence has inspired countless students and professionals. She introduced the Dr. Jacob Zachariah Memorial Gold Medal Quiz Competition, encouraging academic excellence among dental students, and successfully organized two State Conferences in Oral Pathology, fostering scientific exchange and professional development.
She served as a Member of the Undergraduate Board of Studies of the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS) for four years, a Member of the Medical and Legal Ethics Committee (M & LEC) of KUHS, and a Member of the Postgraduate Board of Studies of KUHS. She is also an Ethical Committee Member of the Kerala Dental Council and has been a Member of the Aardram National Health Mission (Arogya Kerala).
Beyond academics, Dr. Sudha has consistently demonstrated an unwavering commitment to public health and community welfare. As Chairperson of the Pain and Palliative Care Society, Kozhikode, for six years, she actively promoted compassionate healthcare and palliative care services. She also served as President of the Kerala State Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology Association and as President of the Giants International Ladies Wing, contributing significantly to professional development and social initiatives.
A passionate advocate for preventive healthcare, Dr. Sudha has conducted about 255 public awareness programmes on oral cancer prevention, anti-tobacco awareness, anti-narcotic campaigns, palliative care, and oral health promotion. These programmes have reached diverse sections of society, including Anganwadis, Kudumbashree units, schools, colleges, residents' associations, Panchayats, Taluks, and audiences at state, national, and international levels. She has also delivered numerous radio talks on oral cancer, anti-tobacco awareness, and oral diseases, while contributing articles to various magazines to promote oral health awareness among the public.
Recognizing the importance of compassionate healthcare education, Dr. Sudha played an active role in introducing Palliative Care into the BDS curriculum in 2017. She further initiated student-led palliative care programmes at Government Dental College, Kozhikode, and Government Dental College, Thrissur, encouraging future dental professionals to embrace holistic patient care. She is also a trained Anti-Tobacco Counsellor, actively supporting tobacco cessation initiatives. During the COVID-19 pandemic, she served as a Telemedicine Consultant for the Namma Help Desk, extending healthcare services and guidance to the community during a critical period.
